Thomas Russell Childers, 80, of Horse Run Drive, passed away Monday, November 17, 2008 in his home. Born in Gaffney, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Tom Russell Childers and Lucy Stepp Childers. Mr. Childers was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, where he received the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with a Star and the Purple Heart, while serving aboard the U.S.S. Wilhoite and U.S.S. Bull. He was a member of the Under-Aged Veterans Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 280. Thomas touched many lives and will be greatly missed. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret Kelly Childers of Chesapeake; a son, Thomas Russell Childers, Jr. of Washington State and a daughter, Deborah Childers Hennessy and husband Randy of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, Scott Thomas and wife Laura, Barbara, Caitlin, Kelly Ann, Logan and Megan; one great-granddaughter, Cadence; a brother, Raymond Childers of Calabash, NC; three uncles J.W., Raymond and Lloyd Childers and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service with military honors will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake. The interment will be at a later date.
A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m., Friday with the family receiving friends until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
