Delores Barton Benson

Delores Barton Benson, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2013. Born in Durham, NC she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Jesse Barton. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years Allan Julius Benson and a son, Dale Allan Benson. Delores touched many lives as a teacher with Chesapeake Public Schools for 33 years. She was active in her community, participating in the Great Bridge Boys Baseball Association, Chesapeake Care Free Clinic, Meals on Wheels, Chesapeake Parks and Recreation, Chesapeake Volunteers and Youth Services and the Women’s Division, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Centerville Baptist Church for 55 years. Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Benson leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Julie Wittman and husband David of New London, NC; a son, Adam Benson and wife Donna of Moyock, NC; two grandchildren, Amanda and A. Jay Benson, six step-grandchildren Alex and Brittney Nagy, David, Joey, Randy, and Daniel Wittman; eight great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Rev. Kevin Ritter will officiate. The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin on Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. At all other times, the family will be at Mrs. Benson’s home on Butterfly Drive, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake, PO BOX 15343, Chesapeake, VA 23328 or the Chesapeake Care Free Clinic, 2145 S.
